One Day In
Detroit
By Vasil Boglev
It was at the end of August 1981 when I went to Detroit,
Michigan. Yugoslav immigrants from North America were gathering in
Detroit for a festival of music and dance of all Yugoslav ethnicities,
the so-called Yugoslav Festival.
I was impressed with the city. I got a glimpse of the America I used to
see on films back in (then) Yugoslavia. It was like a live movie
happening right there, right then. Everything was new to me - wide
avenues, and small alleys, the skyscrapers and the small industrial
buildings, the parks and the homeless. The people were very friendly;
they didn't complain when I photographed them. Some even posed for the
camera. Then came the protest. Croatians and Albanians from Kosovo were
protesting against Yugoslavia. It was a peaceful march with strong
messages on the banners, some of which became a reality at the beginning
of the 90s during the bloody war in the former Yugoslavia. But, that's
another story...

Homebound
/ Macedonia 2007
By Vasil Boglev
Situated in the heart of the Balkans, Macedonia is a
little-known land with a rich yet turbulent history and untold stories.
Its territory has been home to some of the first European civilizations
and empires, and in modern days, surprisingly diverse peoples, including
Macedonians, Albanians, Vlachs, Turks, Roma..., each with their own
distinct languages, customs and traditions. Through this photographic
collection of Sydney-based photographer Vasil Boglev, the stories of
this small country are brought to life. They concern the ordinary, the
otherwise hidden and, sometimes, the not-so-pretty everyday reality of
Macedonia in the post-socialist era. Boglev's motifs are the streets,
the shabby dwellings, the beautiful landscapes, the untouched
countryside and especially, the people.

Sydney
Unplugged
By Vasil Boglev
Sydney
Unplugged is a photography book about Sydney - its
buildings, its street, its parks, and certainly, its
people, the Sydneysiders.
All 232 of the photographs were taken
by photographer Vasil Boglev over a period of six years,
between 2003 and 2008.They show the simple, readily
visible, everyday life of the city, and offer insights
into aspects of city life not so readily visible.
